How Energy Works

here are two valid ways to come to a useful understanding of energy works in relation to intuitive knowledge and healing. The first is explanatory, the second is experiential. This article provides both approaches. We’ll start with the basics.

How Your Brain Works

Everyone knows the most basic information about our brains and how they work. They’re made of about a hundred billion nerve cells (about as many trees as you’ll find in the Amazon jungle), and each cell connects to about ten thousand others (making a thousand trillion connections – about as many leaves in the Amazon).

These cells transmit information via electical signals and neurochemicals. Some parts of your brain control autonomic functions like your heartbeat, breathing, digestion and blood pressure. Other parts collect sensory information and determine how much to pass through to consciousness. Other parts control voluntary movement. Other parts think and remember.

That’s simple enough.

How Your Subconscious Works

To more fully understand how energy work and healing makes such a substantial impact, it’s important to know a few things about the subconscious, particularly the brain stem.

The brain stem is the most basic part of the brain. It deals with low-level survival functions such as gathering food, sleeping, reproduction and self defense. The most basic brains consist of a brain stem and nothing else.

The brain stem’s survival instinct – despite the best of intentions – is the root of many of our “issues” that complicate our lives and cause us grief. For example, when a child touches a hot stove, the brain stem notices that this action is dangerous and the next time the child sees a hot stove, it tosses out some chemicals that cause the emotion of fear. The child thus makes a negative association with touching hot stoves and, with many other such lessons and any luck, will probably surivive to adulthood.

The problems begin when the brain stem starts protecting us in ways that also limit our growth, safety, happiness, and ability to thrive.

For example, have you ever been rejected by someone you loved? Noting the unpleasant results, the brain stem gets to work on protecting you from ever suffering that way again. Next time you begin to feel those dangerous feelings of love, out come the same chemicals used for the hot stove. “Danger!” they shout. “Run for your life!”

The second important thing to know about your subconscious is that it’s usually in charge. We’d like to think that our conscious mind makes rational decisions and those determine our actions, but science tells us otherwise in many cases. In fact, the subconscious seems to know we’re going to act a split second before our conscious minds are even aware of the choice.

Good News & Bad News

On one hand, it’s a darn good thing the subconscious runs the show – if we had to consciously control all the functions that keep us alive, we wouldn’t surive for a minute! Our conscious mind can only hold one thought at a time. It’s a terrible multitasker and there are billions of bits of information entering our brain at any given moment.

The bad news is that it doesn’t always make the decisions you wish it would. The other bad news is that these subconscious decisions are generally not out of reach to your conscious mind, but utterly invisible. You might *know* you’re irrationally afraid of heights or authority figures or people you’re attracted to, but knowing that at the conscious level doesn’t seem to help.

The good news is that there are solutions and those deep protections that trip you up can be permanently transformed. You may choose talk therapy which works to bring the subconscious more conscious, you may choose various energy modalities that skim off pent up pressures and may eventually let the deeper fears and paradigms release and mature, or you can work with Utah Energy Works and shift the deepest energies which may allow those deep fears and limiting beliefs to relax and change much more quickly, effortlessly, and inexpensively. The experiential learning examples below will provide some inkling of how this is possible.

How Your Mind Works

One final point to make about your brain is that it’s not the same thing as your mind. Your mind is commonly defined as your awareness or your point of reference. While your brain is only capable of learning via sensory input and imagination, your mind is able to reference vast amounts of information from other sources. Some people call this the spirit. Others point to recent science and complex theories like zero point field to explain this phenomenon.

Whatever the explanation, this article is satisfied with the fact that there’s abundant evidence that energy and the physical world does not behave according to the purely mechanistic model of forty or fifty years ago, and that an individual is able to not only receive knowledge from sources beyond the ability of computers and machinery to measure, but also influence the physical world just by thinking. This is the realm of subtle (or putative) energy and forms one of the most fascinating areas of modern science, medicine, psychology, philosophy and other disciplines.

Experiential Learning

Rather than delve into the elaborate scientific experiments and explanations for how reality happens and energy works, we’ll switch gears now and show you how to have your very own experience in knowing beyond what your senses deliver and changing physical reality with no technologically-measurable input. It’s fascinating, it’s fun, and it’s an incredibly valuable skill to develop!

Exercise 1: Mind Reading

This is not a parlor trick with an unknown accomplice hidden in the crowd. It’s not a numbers game where chance stacks the odds in your favor. You probably won’t succeed in reading the actual thoughts passing through someone’s mind, either, though it has been done. You will simply learn to pay more attention to a source of information input that you have probably used extensively but not been aware of because no one pointed it out.

For example, have you ever met someone and had a strong impression regarding their character that seemed to contradict all other indications yet later proved true? You have probably heard the stories about a pair of twins, living thousands of miles apart, where one had an accident and the other, sensing that something was wrong, immediately phoned? Or the parent who “had a bad feeling” about a teenager’s plans, and whether or not the teen went out anyway, something went horribly wrong? How about religious experiences where faith is confirmed with powerful feelings of love and light or prayers are answered with unmistakable inspiration?

When this type of intuitive knowing first hit pop culture in the 1970’s, the fad was called ESP (extra-sensory perception) and the general consensus was you either had the gift or you didn’t. The results of the following experience being conducted with thousands of people around the world indicates that well over 90% of participants are able to tap into this ability.

Here’s how to go about it:

1. Choose a partner.
You can try this with anyone willing to give it a shot, but it sometimes helps to work with someone you do not know well. This prevents you from thinking that you’re just imagining things you already knew about your partner. When you begin sharing facts that you have no other way of knowing about a complete stranger, your confidence in your intuitive skills rises considerably.

2. Sit facing each other.
Choose a spot where you won’t be disturbed and won’t feel self conscious.

3. Look into each others eyes for at least 3-4 minutes.
This isn’t a staring contest – you can blink. You may feel uncomfortable for the first minute or two, but once the connection starts working, you may feel very calm and comfortable.

Why does eye contact make us feel so uncomfortable and…vulnerable, anyway? Exactly!! It’s because the eyes truly are the window to the soul and a great deal of information may be passed through them. Did you know that some cultures are more highly aware of this fact and the Japanese, for example, sometimes take time before business meetings to read one another and establish trust. When you get skilled at reading people on this level, it’s impossible to lie.

One of the greatest benefits of learning to read people through their eyes is that you see them on a much deeper level. You see beyond the shape and color and fashions and labels and straight down into their core. Your friendships grow more deep and rich and rewarding. When you learn to see people’s core, you realize that people truly are inherently good. What isn’t good becomes understood as self-protections or efforts to figure things out, and is more easily tolerated and forgiven.

4. Clear your mind and wait for feelings or impressions to strike you.
When you feel something, hold onto the feeling. It may help to visualize it – any image, shape or color that seems to match the feeling will work. Simply let yourself experience the feeling (right brain work) and wait for the words that explain the feeling (left brain work) to come along. You’ll know you’re doing it right when you experience epiphanies, suddenly making quantum leaps in understanding far from anything you previously understood.

Typical impressions may sound like these:

– “You really love you mom.”
– “You’re a very loyal friend.”
– “You have a real hunger for knowledge.”

More specific examples may sound like these:

– “I imagine you standing in a crowd on the beach around a bonfire” (this was with a first-semester college student from Hawaii and had been missing doing that with friends back home).
– “I imagine you driving down the interstate with two girls” (at that moment, the partner had been thinking of going to a college a hundred miles down the interstate and two girls he planned to date there).

5. After the 3-5 minutes has elapsed, take turns sharing your impressions.
If you don’t successfully get an intuitive impression, you may be thinking too hard or paying attention to physical signals like fashions, posture, or even minute facial expressions that we are not even consciously aware of yet which pervade communication. Don’t worry about it. Try again another day or with another partner. Some people are much easier to read than others.

6. Recognize that “perception is projection.”
In other words, it’s much easier to see traits in others that we also possess. If you saw the other person as kind, then the same can likely be said about you. You probably gravitate to your chosen friends because they reflect the parts of you that make you feel good about yourself.

There’s a chance that when you share your impression, the other person will not see how it relates to him or her. This could be because you were “projecting” (assigning your own perceptions to others and then reading them back). It could also be because the person simply doesn’t recognize that trait in her or himself or that it wasn’t explained in a way that they could understand. Regardless, don’t worry about it. Intuitive skills require practice before most people get good at it. It takes time to distinguish between your intuitive knowing and projection, imagination, or other sources of knowing. Until your skills become highly developed, be careful in drawing conclusions derived from this exercise.

Exercise 2: Instant Headache Relief

Here’s another very simple exercise that demonstrates another way to sense and put energy to good use.

1. When someone has a headache, get permission to try this experience (it also works for other physical ailments but often doesn’t get as quick or noticeable results).

2. Place your hands near the person’s head or neck (anywhere from four inches to five feet or more).

3. Notice a sensation similar to heat.
This is energy. If you think carefully, you’ll notice that it doesn’t quite feel like heat. It may feel like a tingling, and it may feel the same regardless of distance from the subject.

4. Move your hands to other positions around the person’s head and stop where you sense the most energy.
The person will often confirm that the headache is centered in the area where you felt the most energy.

5. If the sensation fades, move your hand to another position. Follow the energy.
The person will often report that the headache shifts in sync with the energy.

6. When you can no longer detect any strong energy, the headache is probably gone as well.
This can take anywhere between ten seconds and several minutes or more, depending on the cause of the headache, the skill of the “practitioner,” and other factors. This technique often works on migraines as well as other headaches.

Now that you have a basic understanding and experience of energy work, you can begin to imagine the endless list of related possibilities. As you continue to develop your energy skills, you’ll discover a far richer world than you had ever imagined, including deeper, more satisfying relationships, clearer communications, more positive self image, enhanced problem-solving skills, the healing arts and more.

How Energy Work Works

Many versions of energy healing exist – from various traditional forms of medicine to homeopathy, acupuncture, cranial sacral and reiki. The best massage therapists and chiropractors implement forms of energy work for deeper and more lasting effect. Most energy work modalities incorporate intuitive knowing with movement, pressure, breathing, or visualization techniques. Most energy workers “tune in” to identify “stuck” energies or locate energies “near the surface” and lined up for release.
